1. What should I do with an abandoned bicycle?

You can help GAB by returning abandoned bikes to a GAB rack. How can you tell if a bike needs returned? Basically if the bike is “distressed” then return it to a rack. An example of a distressed bike is one that is obviously broken or has been in the same location for more than 24 hours.

If a bike is sitting outside a business, it may very well be doing fine as long as it hasn’t been there more than 24 hours so it’s perfectly OK to leave it there for the next rider to enjoy. If you are a property owner and discover an unwanted bike on your property you can either return it to a GAB rack (preferred) or text GAB to have it picked up during the next bike roundup, usually once per week.

2. What should I do with a damaged bicycle?

If you find a bike needs repair, text GAB and the bike will be picked up for maintenance.

2. How can this be free?

Our service is fun, easy and free. We use an electric car to cut out the cost of fuel and work with some great sponsors to make the service possible.

3. When does the DASH operate?

During this first phase of implementation, the MHK DASH will operate during evenings and Saturdays:

•    Monday – Thursday | 4:00pm – 9:00pm

•    Friday | 4:00pm – 10:00pm

•    Saturday | 8:00am – 10:00pm (May through September)

•    Saturday | 12:00pm – 10:00pm (October through April)

The hours of operation are subject to change and dependent solely on volunteer availability. 

4. Where does the DASH operate?

During this first phase of implementation, the service routes for the DASH will be limited to approximately one square mile within the urban core of Manhattan. Bounded to the north by Anderson/Bluemont Avenue, to the east by 3rd Street, south by Ft. Riley Blvd, and west by 17th Street.

5. How do I get a ride?

Just wave us down or text the TextFree phone number located on the outside of the shuttle (785-379-3274 or 785-379-DASH). TextFree is a free application that will record all calls and texts to the phone number listed

above. Community members can text this number when they wish to schedule a pick up. Once the shuttle’s there you can hop on and hop off anywhere within our service area.  

6. Who drives the DASH?

Local volunteers who love to meet new people and want to enhance our vibrant community! Our drivers are fun, responsible and efficient. While the ride is free, you are encouraged to tip them for a job well done!

7. How do I become a DASH driver?

You’re the perfect fit for our team if you meet these qualifications:

You love to drive

You have a good driving record

You know how to use a smartphone and mobile apps

You enjoy meeting new people

You are reliable and accountable

You are at least 18 years old

1. Who owns GAB?

GAB is not a privately owned business nor is it a service of the City of Manhattan. In fact, no one “owns” Green Apple Bikes. Instead, GAB is a non-profit organization that is supported by the local community. GAB has a local board of directors that provide program oversight and financial accountability for the program.

2. How is the program funded?

Sponsors, Donors and Community Volunteers are all necessary to make the program work.

• Sponsors provide monetary & in-kind support for the program via the rack sponsorship program.


• Donors provide monetary support by sponsoring individual bikes.


• Community Volunteers are those who help build new bikes, repair bikes, return bikes to racks, etc.
